“8 x 8 Squared”: A Group Show Curated By Kelly Vivanco
February 10 – March 3
Distinction Gallery is proud to present “8 x 8 Squared”, an exhibition curated by represented Escondido based artist, Kelly Vivanco, featuring new artworks by Vivanco and 12 other highly sought after artists. The opening reception with Vivanco and several participating artists will be held on Saturday February 10, from 6-10pm. For the reception we will have live music, ArtHatch open studios, BK Cellars Wine, and Stone Beer.
The exhibition will include 1-5, 8 inch by 8 inch new paintings created by each of the following artists: Paul Chatem, Jason Limon, Jennifer Lewis, Jeremy Hush, Charlie Immer, Caitlin Hackett, Amy Earles, Jon MacNair, Sally Deng, Yellena Jame, Aya Kakeda, Matt Gordan, and Kelly Vivanco.
Kelly Vivanco, a native to Southern California, earned her BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design. She works with a variety of media to create art with whimsy, nostalgia and a sense of child-like wonder.
This is the second exhibition that Vivanco has curated for Distinction Gallery. The first “Infinity Squared” was held in December of 2008 and included many of the same artists, also paintings of the same 8 x 8 inch size.
Vivanco draws from the real and imagined world to populate her works with a host of playful and curious characters. She takes inspiration from vintage photographs, children's literature and the oddness of her dreams. Vivanco has exhibited in solo and group shows across the U.S. including California Center for the Arts Museum, The Portsmouth Museum of Art, Thinkspace, SURU, Gallery 1988, Subtext, Rotofugi, Flatcolor, 323 East, London Miles, Art Basel and Orange County Center for Contemporary Arts. Her work is collected in the U.S. and abroad; and her daily comic, Patches, has a worldwide following. She currently resides in Escondido, California.
Gallery Director Melissa Inez Walker, “I am thrilled to have one of my personal favorite artists, Kelly Vivanco, back to curate a second exhibition for us – 10 years later. The first exhibition was a success and I look forward to seeing new artwork by some past gallery artists and many new ones”.
The exhibition will run from February 10 – March 3. The opening reception with many artists, live music, ArtHatch open studios, Stone Beer, and BK Cellars wine will be on Saturday February 10, from 6-10pm.
ArtHatch is a 7,000 square foot building which houses Distinction Gallery: exhibitions changing monthly, multiple exhibition spaces featuring work by represented artists, "The Alley" featuring over 20 local artists, 14 artist studios, ranging in size from 150 to 800 square feet, featuring local artists and the ArtHatch teens.
