WATER: An Endangered Resource
Water is an endangered resource in Southern California. It is vital to our economic stability and significant for our national security. Unfortunately, our distribution infrastructure is old, equipment is obsolete, supplies are unreliable, and policies are restrictive. Under these circumstances, the water industry faces serious challenges if management practices do not change.
Since these problems do not show up at the tap, many people do not know or care they exist. We should know and we should care. There are enormous opportunities for improvement. Through the application of innovative products and cross-industry technologies, Southern California can forge a path towards water sustainability.
The Water Tutorial takes a detailed look at the water industry from an insider's perspective. We focus on the infrastructure, processes, and what the water industry needs to do to guarantee our region's water future.
In this fast paced, intensive program, participants gain a proper understanding of water terminology (water talk), technology, and industry operations. We point out the strengths and weaknesses in the complete system, how much energy is used and can be saved, and areas that need innovative technological solutions. We also discuss the administration of water services and the municipal model of governance.
Further, as the demand for water increases, new issues develop. This program will draw particular attention to areas able to take advantage of modern technology such as automated controllers, in-line sensors, and cutting-edge biotechnology to solve these emerging issues. At the same time, we uncover problem areas that desperately need solutions that do not exist today.
Finally, many of today's problems with water management are due to strict regulations. These regulations limit the type of technology used and make solutions challenging. In each subject covered, we explore State and Federal policies, including the Clean Water Act and the Water Conservation Act, and examine how they influence water management strategies.
